Bishop's debut pro fight, for example, is against a wily old veteran who attempts to con the judging panel by avoiding any contact for two thirds of the round before unleashing a barrage of punches at the end. In what must be a contender for one of the more thrilling and dramatic video game opening acts, the story begins with Andre in prison, fighting a white supremacist in a bare knuckle fist fight, before being brutally beaten by a number of fellow prisoners in the shower!

It follows the path of Andre Bishop, a decent boxer and thoroughly nice bloke who goes from rags to riches and back again in a journey that sees him live out the plot of practically every major boxing movie ever made. Hurrah for EA Canada, because the latest title Fight Night Champion has a story mode which manages to inject a bit of charisma into the series. Legacy mode in the previous instalments has always fallen short, offering little in the way personality and charm, making it difficult to emotionally invest in your boxer. However, one thing that has always been lacking from the franchise is a riveting and engaging career mode. More recently, 2009 release Fight Night Round 4 earned our respect thanks to its fluid, fast-paced gameplay and wealth of extras. The franchise continued to evolve and innovate and in 2006 video game fans were treated to the graphically superior next-gen instalment Fight Night Round 3, which at the time featured the finest visuals ever seen in a video game.
